History

It was in the year 1930 that the ‘Father of the Nation’-Mahatma Gandhi undertook a long and arduous trek starting from Sabarmati Ashram situated in Ahmedabad that terminated in Dandi Beach. Gandhi, along with those who had joined him in the march vowed to end British rule in India by picking up a handful of brackish mud with water. Gandhiji and his acolytes walked almost continuously for nearly 25 days before reaching Dandi seacoast. This onward march came to be known as the ‘Dandi March’ or the ‘Dandi Salt March’. There is a sleepy hamlet by the same name near the beach.
